American Chestnut

American Chestnut is a beautiful wood that is for the most part extinct. The chestnut blight wiped out American chestnut trees in the 1890’s-1900’s. This giant tree was used in many early barn builds. It is a hardwood but is much lighter weight than oak. Sometimes we will see “wormy chestnut” texture in boards. 1″ thick chestnut is not as common as beams or 2″ thick stock, so we don’t always have a large quantity, but we try to stock it as much as possible because we love working with it so much.
